Hill 2

Welcome to Hill 2

Welcome to year 2! Mrs Irfan is so excited to begin a new term full of wonderful learning, discovery, and growth. In Year 2, we are passionate about creating a nurturing and stimulating environment where every child feels valued, inspired, and empowered to do their best.

This term, we will be placing a strong focus on phonics, reading, and vocabulary development. These are essential building blocks for confident communication and lifelong learning. Through daily phonics sessions, engaging reading activities, and rich vocabulary exploration, we aim to help every child become a fluent reader and a confident writer.

Our learning will be brought to life through our exciting ‘WONDER’ curriculum, which is designed to spark curiosity and make learning meaningful and memorable. Whether we’re exploring traditional tales in English, discovering the world around us in Geography, or investigating numbers in Maths, every lesson is an opportunity to grow and shine.

At the heart of everything we do are our RAISE values — Respect, Aspiration, Inclusivity, Service, and Empowerment. These values guide us in building a caring and inclusive classroom community where every child is encouraged to aim high, support one another, and believe in themselves.

We are looking forward to working closely with you throughout the year to ensure your child has a happy, successful, and inspiring Year 2 experience. Let’s make it a fantastic year together!

This half term at School

This term, our young mathematicians will be exploring the exciting world of addition and subtraction. They will be learning how to use number bond diagrams and the standard column method to solve a variety of problems. Each lesson will build on the last, with small steps and plenty of practice to help every child develop a deep understanding of these key concepts.

Non-Fiction Focus: Farmer’s Diary (Recount Writing)

Children will step into the shoes of a farmer as they explore the features of a recount. Using the Recount Toolkit, they will learn how to write in the past tense, use time connectives, and include personal thoughts and feelings to bring their writing to life. This unit will link beautifully with our geography topic on farms, giving pupils a real-world context for their writing.

Fiction Focus: Jack and the Beanstalk (Rags to Riches Tale)

In our fiction unit, we will delve into the traditional tale of Jack and the Beanstalk, exploring it as a classic rags to riches story. Pupils will learn how to build suspense in their writing, using descriptive language, cliffhangers, and powerful verbs to keep their readers hooked. They will also have the opportunity to innovate their own versions of the tale, developing their creativity and narrative skills.

Throughout the term, we will continue to focus on building vocabulary, sentence structure, and confidence in both spoken and written English. We’re looking forward to seeing the children’s imaginations flourish!
