Hill 2
Welcome to Hill 2
Welcome Back!
We hope you had a wonderful break! This half-term is packed with exciting learning opportunities across all subjects. Here’s what we’ll be focusing on:
This half term at School
Year 2 will have an exciting and imaginative start to their English learning this term! In Non‑Fiction, the children will work on a recount all about their Chocolate Factory Visit, using our Recount Toolkit to help them write in order, include time connectives, and bring their experiences to life with clear, detailed sentences. They will enjoy reliving the sights, smells, and delicious discoveries of the day!
In Fiction, Year 2 will dive into the much‑loved story The Lighthouse Keeper’s Lunch as an example of a Beat the Monster Tale. Using our Description Toolkit, the children will explore how to create vivid characters, paint detailed settings, and build suspense as the “monster” challenges the hero. Their imaginative ideas and expressive vocabulary will bring their writing to life beautifully. It will be a brilliant term of creativity, adventure, and learning!
In Maths, Year 2 will be busy strengthening their understanding across several key calculation and number topics. The children will continue their work on multiplication (Chapter 12, Lessons 4–6), using arrays, equal groups, and repeated addition to build a secure foundation. They will then move on to division (Chapter 13), practising both sharing and grouping to solve problems with increasing independence. In Fractions (Chapter 14), Year 2 will explore halves, thirds, and quarters of shapes and quantities, using practical resources to support their learning. Finally, the children will revisit Number and Place Value within 10 (Chapter 15), consolidating their skills in counting, comparing, and representing numbers accurately. It will be a productive and engaging term, with pupils expected to make fantastic progress across all areas.
In History, Year 2 will learn about Learie Constantine and why he was awarded the Trinity Cross, Trinidad and Tobago’s highest national honour. The children will discover that Learie Constantine was not only a talented cricketer but also a brave and influential figure who fought for fairness, equality, and justice throughout his life. They will learn how he stood up against discrimination, worked as a lawyer, diplomat, and campaigner for people’s rights, and used his voice to help create positive change. Because of his outstanding contributions to sport, law, and society, he was awarded the Trinity Cross in recognition of his remarkable impact. Year 2 will enjoy exploring his legacy and understanding how one person’s actions can make a difference in the world.
In Design and Technology, Year 2 will be creating their own ‘Splendid Salads’ as part of their food technology learning. The children will explore a range of fruits, vegetables, and salad ingredients, learning how to prepare them safely using skills such as washing, peeling, cutting, and grating. They will investigate which foods are healthy and how different colours, textures, and flavours can be combined to make a balanced, appealing dish. After designing their own salad ideas, the children will have the chance to make and taste their creations—discovering new ingredients and experimenting with exciting combinations. It will be a deliciously hands‑on project that will encourage independence, healthy choices, and creativity in the kitchen!
In Science, Year 2 will be investigating the fascinating process of how plants germinate and grow. The children will learn that germination begins when a seed has the right conditions—water, warmth, and air. They will discover how the seed coat softens, allowing a tiny root to emerge first, followed by a small shoot that pushes upwards toward the light. Through close observation, the children will watch how plants develop roots, stems, leaves, and eventually become strong, healthy plants. They will carry out simple investigations, make predictions, record changes over time, and compare how different conditions affect plant growth. This hands‑on learning will help Year 2 understand just how amazing plants are and how important they are to life on Earth.
In Computing, Year 2 will explore the exciting world of digital music as part of our ‘Creating Media’ unit. The children will learn how digital tools can be used to create, edit, and layer sounds to produce their own musical pieces. They will experiment with tempo, pitch, and rhythm, discovering how these elements can change the mood or style of a piece of music. Using simple music‑making software, the children will compose short patterns, combine different instrument sounds, and listen carefully to how their choices affect the final result. They will have great fun creating their own digital soundscapes and sharing them with the class. This unit will encourage creativity, careful listening, and confidence when working with technology.
