English
Our main text will be “Pirate Tom”, where we’ll explore the setting toolkit to help us write vivid descriptions. Pupils will learn how to create engaging settings and use powerful vocabulary to bring their stories to life.
This half term at School
Mathematics – Mastering Multiplication
This term, our young mathematicians will embark on an exciting journey into the world of multiplication, focusing on the 2, 5, and 10 times tables. Through practical activities and problem-solving challenges, pupils will develop a deep understanding of how multiplication works and why it is such an important skill.
Children will:
Understand what multiplication means and how it can be represented using arrays, groups, and repeated addition.
Explore patterns in multiplication, noticing links between different times tables.
Learn about the commutative law (e.g., 2 × 5 = 5 × 2) and how it helps make calculations easier.
Apply multiplication skills to real-life problems, building confidence in reasoning and problem-solving.
This learning will provide strong foundations for future mathematical concepts, including division, fractions, and more complex problem-solving.
English – Exploring Vivid Settings with Pirate Tom
This term in English, our main text will be Pirate Tom. Through this exciting story, pupils will dive into the adventurous world of pirates and learn how to create vivid, engaging settings in their own writing. Using our Setting Toolkit, children will explore how to bring scenes to life with powerful vocabulary, sensory details, and expanded noun phrases.
Pupils will:
Analyse descriptive language in the text to understand how authors paint a picture for the reader.
Experiment with expanded noun phrases and adjectives, using commas to add rich detail.
Develop their own setting descriptions, imagining pirate ships, golden beaches, and hidden treasures.
Use figurative language such as similes and personification to make their writing more creative and immersive.
By the end of the unit, children will be able to craft settings that transport readers into the heart of their stories—whether it’s a bustling pirate ship, a mysterious island, or a treasure-filled cave.
Science – Materials
Our topic is Materials and Their Uses. Pupils will explore:
What objects are made from and why certain materials suit their uses.
How the shape of some solid objects can be changed.
Comparing the suitability and strength of different materials.
We’ll also carry out investigations and record our findings.
History
We’ll be asking: “When and why did my family move to Accrington?” This will help children understand local history and personal connections.
RE
Our focus will be Hindu Dharma, learning about beliefs and practices in Hinduism.
Computing
We’ll work on Programming A – Robot Algorithms, developing logical thinking and sequencing skills.
Design & Technology
Our project is Mechanisms, where pupils will design and make a vehicle.

English – The Magic Faraway Tree Adventure
This term, pupils will be exploring The Enchanted Wood and the magical world of The Magic Faraway Tree by Enid Blyton. This classic story takes children on an unforgettable adventure with Jo, Bessie, and Fanny as they discover a mysterious tree deep in the enchanted wood. At the top of the tree, they find a series of ever-changing lands, each filled with wonder, surprises, and quirky characters like Moon-Face, Silky the fairy, and the Saucepan Man.
