Spring 5

What another incredible term it has been in Year 5! Here are some of our favourite highlights…

Last half term has been bursting with creativity, excitement, and hands‑on learning.

In D.T, we stepped into the kitchen as creative chefs, experimenting with a variety of ingredients and flavours to decide exactly what should go into our perfect stew.

Most children loved the stew and were pleasantly surprised by the taste. Many were eager to try something new and discovered that they really enjoyed the combination of flavours they had created. It was wonderful to see their excitement as they tasted their dishes and realised how delicious their hard work had turned out!

We also celebrated Vaisakhi with lots of energy and excitement. Mr Brown led us in drumming, and the children enjoyed performing lively bhangra dances. It was a joyful celebration, full of music, movement, and smiles, and everyone had a fantastic time joining in.

To celebrate Neurodiversity Week, we held assemblies that helped the children develop empathy and understanding for those with special educational needs. It was a thoughtful and engaging experience, encouraging kindness, respect, and greater awareness across the school.

P.E Days = Monday and Friday Forest School will be every Wednesday

Homework Expectations

We’re excited to share how you can support your child’s learning at home each week. These activities are designed to be simple, enjoyable, and effective in helping your child grow in confidence and ability.

Emile App – Maths & Spellings
Each week, your child will receive home learning tasks through the Emile app, focusing on key maths skills and spelling practice. Your child has their own login and can access the activities from home. It’s a fun and interactive way to reinforce what they’ve learned in class!

Reading – 10 Minutes a Day
Reading together for just 10 minutes a day can make a big difference. It helps build a love for stories, strengthens vocabulary, and improves comprehension. Whether it’s a bedtime story or a quick read after dinner, every minute counts!

Spellings
New spellings will be sent home every Monday, with a short test on Friday. Practising these regularly helps your child become a more confident writer.

Talk Homework – Building Sticky Knowledge
Each week, your child will bring home 3–4 key facts they’ve learned in class. These are part of our “Sticky Knowledge” approach. Talking about these facts with you helps your child remember them and improves their speaking and listening skills.

Thank you for your continued support. Together, we can make learning meaningful and enjoyable for your child!

Our Curriculum this half term

As Writers , we will be writing warning stories based on the theme of railway tracks, focusing on building tension and keeping our readers engaged. We will also be learning how to write a news report about the melting ice caps, exploring how to share important information clearly and effectively.

As Mathmeticians, we will be learning about geometry, including position and movement. We will also explore how to measure volume and work with 3D shapes. In addition, we will learn about Roman numerals and how they were used in the past.

As Readers, we’ll be developing key reading skills such as retrieval, vocabulary building, and inference. We’ll explore a wide range of fiction and non-fiction texts, helping us to become thoughtful, confident, and curious readers.

Our class novel this term is The 1000 Year Old Boy by Ross Welford . It is a magical and moving story about Alfie Monk, who looks like an 11-year-old but is actually 1,000 years old. After a tragic fire destroys everything he knows, Alfie sets out on an epic quest to find a way to grow old naturally

We’re also thrilled to continue our Reading for Pleasure initiative! Each child will be encouraged to read all the books in the Year 5 Reading Spine by the end of the academic year. These carefully chosen books are designed to inspire a lifelong love of reading and spark meaningful conversations at home and in school.

In Art, we will be exploring the work of artists Jackson Pollock and Charlie Mackesy. We will be inspired by Pollock’s splatter painting style, experimenting with different ways to create bold and expressive artwork. We will also look at Charlie Mackesy’s gentle drawings and meaningful messages to help us create artwork that shares feelings and ideas.

As Deep Thinkers in RE, we will be learning about Judaism and its holy text, the Torah. We will explore why the Torah is special to Jewish people and how it is used in their daily lives and worship. We will also learn about important beliefs and traditions in Judaism.

In Computing, we will be learning about selection in quizzes. This means we will explore how computers make choices, like giving different answers depending on what someone clicks or types. We will create our own fun quizzes and learn how to make them interactive.

In Geography, we will be learning about the Alps, a huge mountain range in Europe. We will explore where they are, what they look like, and the different countries they stretch across. We will also learn about the people, animals, and activities in this exciting mountain region
